Children in Ancient Athens
When a child was born in ancient Greece, it was usually an exciting time. The mother would make a wreath that she

would hang on the front door for all to see. The father would hold the baby up and dance. Most babies were not
named for up to ten days. Babies were wrapped tightly in cloths for one or two years so that they would grow up to
walk straight and strong.
To be a citizen in ancient Athens, you had to be a free man over the age of 18. As a result, many parents wanted a
boy so their children would grow up to be citizens. If a baby was unwanted, the father could decide to leave it out in
the cold. Sometimes, a kind family would take in the unwanted baby, often raising her to be a slave.
At age three, children were then given a small jug as a symbol that childhood was over and it was time to be
educated. Girls would learn at home with their mothers. Very few girls would learn how to read or write. All girls
would learn how to cook, clean, weave clothes run a household. Boys started school when they were seven. There
were typically only 20 boys in a class, which was held outside. Boys learned reading, writing, arithmetic and music.
They memorized poetry. They used a stick with a sharp point called a stylus to write on a wooden tablet covered in
wax. They used an abacus to learn math. They also had physical education classes to help stay fit for battle. Slaves
were often sent to school with boys from wealthy families to watch over them.
