Ở Việt Nam, tuy người dân mới sử dụng túi ni-lông phổ biến khoảng vài thập niên, nhưng loại rác này đã và đang gây ô nhiễm môi trường nặng nề. Theo thống kê chưa đầy đủ, chỉ riêng hai thành phố lớn là Hà Nội và TP Hồ Chí Minh, trung bình mỗi ngày thải ra môi trường khoảng 80 tấn nhựa và túi ni-lông. Tại Thừa Thiên Huế, theo khảo sát mới nhất, mỗi ngày toàn tỉnh thải ra môi trường 650 tấn rác (riêng thành phố Huế 200 tấn), trong đó có 6% là rác nhựa, ni lông, tương đương 35 tấn. Con số này không ngừng tăng lên. Theo một khảo sát của cơ quan môi trường, hằng năm một người Việt Nam sử dụng khoảng 30kg các sản phẩm có nguồn gốc từ nhựa.”
