On September 11, 2001, the United States was attacked by terrorists linked to the
group Al Qaeda. As a result, the U. S. increased its presence in areas in and around the
Middle East. The U. S. sent troops into two countries to deal with the threat of terrorism:
Afghanistan and Iraq.
