Southeast China mostly is composed of forest. These forests have an outstanding vertical structure of five layers, of which four are layers of trees. These forests are still known as Fung Shui, which in a literal translation means "Wind and Water". These forests owe their long existence to the nearby villages, which preserve them in accordance with the ancient tradition. Very thick tree trunks form a kind of canopy, which as a dense canopy prevents the development of a rich, greenish layer of soil, except in cases when a void in the canopy is formed due to fallen trees.
