The system of checks and balances is a part of our Constitution. It is used to keep the government from getting too powerful in one branch and hence guarantees that no part of the government becomes too powerful. Each branch has some measure of influence over the other branches and may choose to block procedures of the other branches. For example, the Executive Branch can veto bills from the Legislative Branch, but the Legislative Branch can override the veto.
