Florida belonged to Spain before becoming a state.

In 1513, Florida was encountered by Europeans who claimed the land of Florida as their possession. Florida remained in the possession of Spain until the end of seven years war when Spain decided to give up on Florida to Kingdom of Great Britain in exchange for the release of Havana.

In the second wave of Spanish rule, It first became a territory in the United States and then it was given the position of the individual state, The state of Florida.
