How can learning about someone else's country help me better understand my own?

When going to a poor country like Honduras. It is really humbling showing the sheer amount of poverty and illiteracy. One is able to analyze the drastic difference, and be humble by the amount of things we take for granted. Electricity, not having to work only for a days worth of food, or not being scared for your life every day.
