The Preterite and Imperfect tenses both tell what happened in the past, but they are used depending on what information is being given. Preterite actions tell what happened at a specific moment in time (I ate cereal this morning). Imperfect actions tell what generally, used to, or was happening (I used to eat cereal every morning).
