do you remember how to say you like something? in spanish, remember we use the verb gustar to express what we like or do not like. gustar is a verb in spanish that is loosely translated as “like,” but a more accurate translation is “to be pleasing.”

let’s look at some examples.

me gusta el canal la 1. i like the channel la 1. (the channel la 1 is pleasing to me.)

me gustan las películas de horror. i like horror movies. (horror movies are pleasing to me.)

remember that with the verb gustar you have to think of two important things:

to or for whom something is pleasing.
what is pleasing to the person; this will determine the verb form.

gustar and similar verbs use the indirect object pronouns to indicate to whom something is pleasing:

me nos
te os
le les
ca logo tip: this could get tricky! remember that in english the person doing the liking is actually the indirect object in the spanish sentence. and the thing that is liked is actually the subject in the spanish sentence. this will you determine the verb form! down
in spanish, there are several verbs that function in exactly the same way that gustar does.

they are:

aburrir, which means “to bore”

le aburren los programas musicales a alfonso. musical programs bore alfonso.
nos aburre la película policíaca. the crime movie bores us.
doler, which means “to hurt, to ache”

¿te duele la cabeza? does your head hurt you?
encantar, which means “to very much, to love”

¡me encantan los programas de la vida real! i love reality shows!
(reality shows are very pleasing to me! )
faltar, which means “to be missing”

les faltan $2.00 para la película. they’re missing $2.00 for the movie.
(they are short $2.00 for the movie.)
interesar, which means “to interest”

¿os interesa una película de horror? does a horror movie interest you?
quedar, which means “to fit”

esta camisa te queda bien. this shirt fits you well.
quedar can also mean “to have left”:

me quedan diez minutos. i have ten minutes left.
ca logo tip: gustar and similar verbs can be used with an infinitive. the verb gustar takes the third person singular form when used with an infinitive.

me gusta ver las películas.
nos encanta ver las películas y leer libros.
