Summary of the poem three heroes

“Heroes” is a deceptively easy poem to summarize, primarily because it consists of just four stanzas of four lines. While those sixteen lines could conceivably be boiled down to the observation “Creeley looks back to past heroes like Hercules and Aeneas to remind us that plenty of opportunity still exists to face up to terrifying tasks and do the job required to become a hero” that really doesn’t fully capture the subtle flavorHercules and Aeneas are also dead; if they even ever existed. Whether they did or not is beside the point or even an obstruction to the point. One need not look around for tasks like the Seven Labors of Hercules or be “Aeneas going into death” to find “the next thing” which can put them beyond themselves. The poet exists to extol the legend once the human has become hero, but also to urge the human to seek the path toward becoming a hero.
