The Panama Canal is an interoceanic waterway between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean that crosses the Isthmus of Panama at its narrowest point.

Its construction was initiated by France, led by the entrepreneur Ferdinand de Lesseps. However, there were several problems and obstacles.

This epidemic claimed hundreds of lives.  Since it was not known at that time how these diseases were spread, all the precautions against them did not work. This was one of the causes of the failure of the works in its beginnings.
