Explanation:

Pragmatics studies the use of linguistic signs, words and sentences, in actual situations. It establishes meaning for words and sentences in a contextual meaning. A sentence could have a literal meaning and a meaning more related to the context or the situation at hand.

Pragmatics takes into consideration the factors surrounding the intent with which speech was given or words were written.Pragmatics is a tool in proper language understanding.

An example is;  

"Why is the water on the table?"

This statement could seek for a literal response such as "It is there, so Annie doesn't forget to take it into the car".

However, putting the question into context, it could aim at asking why the water hasn't fulfilled its purpose already at that moment.
