You are the manager of a pharmaceutical research lab and one of your molecular biologists has successfully transferred the human Factor VIII gene (that codes for a blood-clotting protein) into the E. coli genome in the hopes of using the bacterium to produce large quantities of this protein as an injectable treatment for hemophilia. He placed the entire human gene (minus its promoter sequence) downstream of a strong prokaryotic promoter in E. coli and reports that the bacteria are expressing the human gene very effectively, but the purified protein fails to cause any blood clotting in his assay. Remembering your college Cell Bio class, you realize his mistake and tell him that he should examine the protein being produced more closely, and when he does he will find:

a) The bacterially expressed human protein will be far longer in sequence than it should be

b) The bacterially expressed human protein will be far shorter in sequence than it should be

c) The bacterially expressed human protein will be produced as short polypeptide segments, because the bacterial translation machinery will treat the mRNA as a polycistronic message

d) The bacterially expressed human protein will have significant alterations in its amino acid sequence, due to differences in the genetic code between humans and bacteria
