The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was passed on December 16, 1974 in the United States. Here are the components of the SDWA:

SDWA applies to every public water system in the United States.

The act authorizes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set health-based standards for drinking water as protection against both naturally occurring and manufactured contaminants found in drinking water.

SDWA also authorizes the EPA to set minimum standards to protect tap water and asks all owners or operators of public water systems to comply with these primary (health-related) standards.

Under SDWA, the EPA sets standards for state programs to protect underground sources of drinking water from contamination by underground injection of fluids.

After Congress amended the SDWA in 1996, the EPA started protecting drinking water and its sources, such as ground water wells, rivers, lakes, springs, and reservoirs.

Drinking water is necessary for survival. Every day, millions of Americans receive quality drinking water from their public water systems due to SDWA. The act reduces the chances of health risks and protects us from drinking water that is contaminated by disposed chemicals, animal and human wastes, pesticides, and any naturally occurring contamination. If SDWA was not present today, Americans would not have access to potable drinking water. This, in turn, would lead to health risks and result in higher numbers of people falling sick from waterborne diseases. Due to SDWA in the present day, we get to drink water that is treated, disinfected, odorless, and potable.
