Describe how latitude and longitude coordinates are used to locate positions on earth

Latitude tells where you are vertically on the globe between the two poles the north pole and the south pole.
Longitude tells you where you are on the horizontally and it is also in the same plane as the equator.
When you spot a place there is both latitude and longitude.
