Since mitosis produces genetic clones of the parent cell when it divides, all animal and plant cells that grow from a fertilized egg (zygote) are more or less genetically identical. So if the parent cell were diploid (having two sets of chromosomes) the daughter cells would be diploid, and if the parent cell were haploid (having one set of chromosomes - like mosses) the daughter cells would be haploid, too The only time mitosis is NOT used is when it's time to make the eggs and sperm. That's when meiosis is used, always beginning with a diploid parent cell and ending two rounds of division later with 4 unique haploid cells.
