The euglena is found in the protist kingdom. Evolutionarily, protists were the first eukaryotes and the direct ancestors of plants, animals, and fungi. With other species in this kingdom, it is common to see plant-like protists (immobile, autotrophic), fungus-like protists (immobile, heterotrophic) and animal-like protists (mobile, heterotrophic). The euglena is an early animal-like species- it has evolved the ability to self propel, but still relies on autotrophic feeding. As evolution progressed, heterotrophic mobile protists would form and later evolve into modern animals.
