Pituitary gland is an endocrine gland which secretes hormones to control other endocrine glands of the body. Pituitary gland is considered as master gland. The hormones secreted by pituitary are known as tropic hormones. A tropic hormone is the one which is produced by one endocrine gland so as to cause another endocrine gland to release its hormone.

Pituitary gland has anterior part and posterior part mainly.

The anterior part produces the following hormones to control following glands/tissues:

1) Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) : acts on ovaries (gonad)

2) Luteinising hormone (LH) : acts on testes (gonad)

3) Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) : acts on adrenal gland

4) Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) : acts on thyroid gland

5) Prolactin : acts on mammary gland

6) Human growth hormone (hGH) : it stimulates tissue growth especially growth and development of bones (connective tissue)

The posterior part produces the following hormones to control following glands:

1) ADH (Vasopressin) : acts on kidney

2) Oxytocin : helps in birth of a child to by causing uterine muscle contraction during child birth. It is known as birth hormone. It also stimulates milk production in mammary glands.
