Algae are being investigated by the Bronx Zoo scientists as a source of bioenergy. Bioenergy is a form of energy that comes from recently living organisms and can be used to
produce transportation fuels, heat, electricity, and products. Using bioenergy to power cars
and provide electricity could reduce the amount of harmful carbon dioxide emissions in
Earth's atmosphere. If algae begin to be grown on a large scale across the country for
production into biofuels, what other effect might the algal growth have on the carbon cycle?
