Homologous chromosomes carry the same types of genes. Homologous chromosomes are 99% identical. The physical location of a gene on the chromosome is called an allele. Haploid organisms can have homologous chromosomes. Chromosomes that are heterozygous for an allele are not homologous. Homologous chromosomes may contain different alleles of a gene.
