The simplest level of protein structure is the primary structure which is simply the sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain. The order of a protein is resolute by the DNA of the gene that encrypts the protein or that encodes a portion of the protein, for multi-subunit proteins. An alteration in the DNA of the gene sequence may principal to an alteration in the amino acid order of the protein. Even altering just one amino acid in a sequence of a protein can affect the protein general assembly and purpose.
