Money for infrastructure repairs is scarce in many states, which makes maintaining aging bridges a challenge due to the complex structural issues they have. Rather than using complex employee onsite inspection as the first option, one state deploys sensors on its oldest and/or most critical bridges; the sensors monitor conditions and stresses on those bridges by streaming information back to the bridge inspection division. Using the sensor information with a Big Data system, the state can expect to see

A. lower maintenance costs due to earlier detection of structural repair issues, which will then be cheaper to repair.
B. higher maintenance costs due to the cost of the sensors and the Big Data system.
C. about the same maintenance costs, because the repair costs will be the same, regardless of how the problems are discovered.
D. protests from bridge inspection employees, because the sensors mean some of them will be laid off.
