Two factors determine whether a substance is a solid, a liquid, or a gas: The kinetic energies of the particles (atoms, molecules, or ions) that make up a substance. Kinetic energy tends to keep the particles moving apart. The attractive intermolecular forces between particles that tend to draw the particles together. As the temperature continues to drop, the matter forms a solid. Due to the solid's low kinetic energy, particles have no "time" to move around, the particles have more "time" to be attracted. Therefore, solids have the strongest intramolecular forces (because they have the strongest attraction). The three states of matter are: Solids: The strong bonds between molecules make solids rigid and very difficult to deform. Liquids: The relatively weak bonds between molecules allow liquids to be deformed without effort.
