Procedure 1.Measure approximately 10 mL of distilled water in the 50 mL graduated cylinder. Record exact volume. 2.Place 18-20 popcorn kernels in the graduated cylinder with the water. Tap the cylinder to force any air bubbles off the kernels. Record the new volume. 3.Remove the kernels from the graduated cylinder and dry them. 4.Use the graduated cylinder next to the vegetable oil to measure 1.0 – 1.5 mL. Pour oil into 400-mL beaker. 5.Place the dry kernels the beaker with the oil. 6.Measure the total mass of the beaker, oil, and the kernels. Record this mass. 7.Turn on the hot plate to medium high setting. 8.Place the beaker on the hot plate. Place wire gauze on top of the beaker. 9.Observe the changes in the kernels and oil while heating, then turn off the hot plate when the popcorn has popped and before any burning occurs. 10.Using the beaker tongs, remove the beaker from the hot plate and allow it to cool completely. 11.Record the final mass of the beaker, oil, and the popcorn once cooling is complete.
