I would say that your chances of dying were higher than surfing because of the turbulent waters, flying debris, and the overall severety of the situation. The ocean water, if the body is exposed to it long enough, will kill you from hypothermia, or just sheer exhaustion, and collapsing. I would suggest you get out as quickly as possible, if possible. if not, get to the highest sheltered ground possible.
