Water at 300 K overflows the inside of a vertical open pipe of diameter 1m and forms a smooth film of thickness 0.08cm. Pure carbon dioxide at 1atm pressure flows slowly through the inside of the pipe. If the pipe is 3.5m long, and the water enters free of carbon dioxide. (1) At what rate (moles/hr) can carbon dioxide be removed from the system in the existing water stream? (2) Is it a practical device? Explain and suggest improvement or alternative. The Henry’s constant for CO2/water is H=500 atm, where p(atm)=H x CO2, where xCO2 is the mole fraction of CO2 in the solution. The diffusion coefficient of CO2 in water at 300 K is 3x10-6 cm2/s.
