a student in a communications course is assigned to read the passage that follows and connect it to a reading from another course. read the passage and choose which of the courses listed below would be most likely to provide a reading connection.
the social and cultural impact of public relations, like that of advertising, has been immense. in its infancy, pr convince many american businesses of the value of nurturing the public, who had been redefined as purchasers rather than as producers of their own goods. pr also set the tone for the corporate image building that characterized the economic environment of the twentieth century and transformed the profession of journalism by complicating the way "facts" could be interpreted. perhaps pr's most significant effect, however, has been on the political process in which individuals and organizations--on both the right and the left--hire spin doctors to shape their media images.

10. what conclusion might a reader draw from the passage below about word choice?
other than your thoughts, your words are your primary entry point into your experience. they paint a picture of your expectation and pave the way towards your experience. when you "have" to do something it implies that it's not a choice--that you'd rather be somewhere else, doing something different. this, in turn, implies that your heart isn't fully into what you are doing, which makes living up to your potential extremely difficult and enjoying your experience near impossible. so when you say, "i have to go to work," you are in a subtle way setting yourself up for a bad day. this doesn't mean you'll always have a bad day--but it certainly increases the likelihood.
that a shift in language, such as, "i am choosing to go to work," can have a positive effect on your attitude.
that when you have choices, you are prevented from living up to your potential.
that having a bad day at work is unavoidable.
that if you want to have an enjoyable experience, you should convince yourself that you "have" to do it.
