Ralph tries to keep the boys from becoming savage by trying to maintain typical civilized human ways with shelter and hierarchy, as well as empathy towards each other. Jack does the opposite and supports savagery by encouraging blood lust and harmful ways to other boys and animals.

This theme is shown when on first arrival the boys are put into order by choosing a leader and following order which is proof of civilization being present, but when fear escalates, the violence and disorder overthrow civilization and a more blood thirsty leader is chosen.

Violence and order is under the appearance of civilization and this is shown when Ralph hunts a boar and is excited by the violence, also when he aids in the group killing of Simon. Ralph represents civilization and even he gave into his primal instincts of violence at a time.
