Homer's epic "The Odyssey" narrates the journey and story of the title character Odysseus staring from after the battle of Troy till his return to his kingdom of Ithaca.

Odysseus was the king of Ithaca who had went to join the Battle of Troy. On his return home, he had to pass through a decade of mistrials and temptations, even encountering many demons and gods and demi-gods. Ten years after the fall of Troy, but Odysseus still hadn't returned back home. His wife Penelope and son Telemachus, whom he left in Ithaca were now under pressure from the nobles of the kingdom asking for the queen to re-marry, for to them it is evident that Odysseus is dead. But Penelope didn't want to believe it and endured the suitors' approaches, delaying it as much as she can.

Meanwhile, Odysseus had been imprisoned by the beautiful nymph Calypso on her island Ogygia. The goddess Athena disguised herself as Leartes and helped Telemachus reproach his mother's suitors. She also helped him travel to Pylos and Sparta, where he learns from king Nestor and Menelaus that his father is still alive. These two kings were Odysseus's companions during the war of Troy.

Odysseus escapes the island with the help of Hermes, thus begins his long journey home where he encountered the Cyclops Polyphemus. He also was saved from the wrath of Poseidon by Athena, who led them to the land of the Phaeacians. There, he narrates his story to the king of Scheria and his men. Then he reached Ithaca but did not immediately go to the palace, his home. Instead, he went to stay with his swineherd Eumaeus's home disguised as a beggar. There, he learns of the suitors and the current situation in the kingdom. The next day, Eumaeus took him to the palace where through the test set by the queen, he revealed his identity to everyone -  Penelope, Telemachus, Eumaeus and the suitors. He then killed all the suitors who have been harassing them. Then he travels to the outskirts of Ithaca to see his father Leartes. Angry over the death of the suitors, their family members attacked the father-son duo but they were defeated. Then, Zeus sends Athena to restore peace and thus, Odysseus retains his kingdom and his family, bringing an end to his long ordeal.
