A life that is easy, such as being rich and not havionf to work could be desribed as a crystal stair. A life that is hard and full of sadness,. worries, and work is more like mother's staircase. She describes hers as full of nails and oin bad shape mean that there is a lot of hardships and tough parts. A crystal stair means your life has been pretty much perfect with no problems or hardships.
