In Jonas's world, age is determined differently from our present world. In his world, all children born the same year are considered to be Ones, no matter the period of the year they were born. Thereby, each age group celebrate their birthdays the same year every December. At age one, children are assigned a name and a family.

In this world, age is important from ages 1 -12 years. After age 12, age isn't important and will no longer matter. Such child from that age is considered an adult and will begin a training to be assigned a job which he will do for life.

In this world, the very young and the very old are treated alike. They are taken care of by other people.
