in hamlet, queen gertrude is mainly a passive character. she married king claudius very shortly after the death of her first husband, king hamlet, brother of claudius. this is very painful for her son, prince hamlet, who believes claudius to be responsible for the death of his father. queen gertrude presents herself as an obedient, pious woman until the accusations from hamlet begin. when accused of participating in the plot to kill her own husband, queen gertrude loses her composure, and subsequent events eventually lead her to anguish and death in the last act.
