Quine’s primary argument against the analytic/synthetic rests on an understanding that all analytic statements are either logical truths or maybe turned into logical truths by replacing words with synonyms. This runs into trouble, however, because he cannot find adequate concepts of ‘meaning’ or ‘synonymy’. He considers a number of possibilities and rejects each in turn; what is each account, and what is wrong with it?
