Can you help get rid of the incoherence in this paragraph? (Make it sound more fluent) The Underground Railroad was a series of roads, locations, and people that helped enslaved people in the American South flee to the North to safety. The North wanted states to be “free states.” Most northerners thought that slavery was wrong and many northern states had outlawed slavery. The South, however, wanted states to be “slave states.” The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. In 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act required that slaves be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state. Anyone who aided a fugitive slave faced severe punishment. The South had checkpoints, patrols, and curfews which made most escapes in the night time. But, the trip was a little easier considering 800 of the 880 miles to travel were northern miles. Harriet Tubman, who escaped from slavery in the South was a leading abolitionist and led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom in the North along the route of the Underground Railroad.
