Walking in Ancient Shoes (1) Human beings have been walking for many years. (2) No one knows how long humans have been wearing shoes to walk. (3) However, scientists have uncovered some archaeological finds that prove shoes are an ancient invention.
(4) In 1938, Luther Cressman was digging in central Oregon. (5) The University of Oregon researcher was studying an area called Fort Rock with his students. (6) Digging through a layer of 7,500-year-old volcanic ash, Cressman was amazed to find a pair of sandals. (7) They were woven from grass and sagebrush bark and were in surprisingly good condition. (8) When he had the sandals tested, Cressman discovered that the sandals were 9,000 to 11,000 years old. (9) He and his team found 75 pairs of similar sandals as they continued to explore. (10) Scientists are not sure why so many shoes were found at the site. (11) Some think that the cave may have been a place for people to make and store shoes before trading them with neighboring tribes. (12) Others say that Fort Rock may have been an ancient shoe factory and shoe store. (13) The shoes found at Fort Rock are so far the oldest shoes ever discovered.
(14) In Armenia, scientists discovered the oldest leather shoe ever found. (15) It was buried in a pit that was lined with yellow clay. (16) The 5,500-year-old shoe was simple but well made and had been stuffed with grass. (17) The shoe was buried along with some dried fruit and other items that suggest the cave was a part of some kind of ceremony. (18) The shoe, however, was not just a ceremonial object. (19) The shoe had clear signs that it had been worn and used frequently.
(20) Before the discovery of the Armenian shoe, another pair of ancient shoes was believed to be the oldest. (21) The shoes were found among the remains of a 5,300-year-old mummy discovered in the mountains between Austria and Italy. (22) The mummy was nicknamed Ötzi the Iceman. (23) This is because he was found preserved in the snow. (24) The ice helped preserve his body as well as his clothes and his shoes. (25) The Iceman's shoes were made of leather. (26) Instead of socks, the Iceman had a layer of soft grass inside his shoes; the grass helped cushion his feet as well as keep them warm. (27) Because the shoes were complex and very well made, scientists tend to think that the shoes were probably made by specialty shoemakers among the Iceman's people.
