early motion pictures. It is hard to imagine how black-and-white movies with no sound and simple

plots could excite an audience. And yet in 1903, The Great Train Robbery created a sensation with

no color, no soundtrack, and less than a dozen minutes in which to tell a simple but exciting story.

The Kinetoscope was an early type of movie projector invented by Thomas Edison in 1891. For

Edison, the invention was an amusing distraction, a toy. The moving images were the result of

playful experiment. Most of the early efforts to produce motion pictures were brief representations of

familiar scenes, such as a running horse or a man sneezing. Even so, people found them fascinating.
