but mr. higgins stayed one stride ahead of frankie until the last few feet of the race. at that point, frankie moved his legs as fast as they would go, and he finally passed his rival. his eyes were on the prize attached to two gigantic oak trees. waiting for the winner to run through it, the beautiful red finish line draped across meadow lane. in triumph, he looked back and stuck his tongue out at mr. higgins. this, however, was frankie's big mistake. because he wasn't looking, he tripped on a crack in the asphalt. by the time frankie got to his feet, mr. higgins was running through the finish line. afterward, mr. higgins came back to check on frankie. however, frankie wouldn't soon forget how his bad sportsmanship cost him the race.
