Food enters the mouth where a mechanical and chemical breakdown of food occurs through chewing and saliva. When we swallow, the esophagus takes the food down to the stomach. In the stomach, food is mixed with gastric juice and muscle contractions break the food down into chyme. The chyme moves into the small intestine which digests and absorbs nutrients and starches, then into the large intestine which dries out the indigestible food and absorbs water and salt.
