A schism tends to be a negative change in the perspective of the original “being”, but it is often occurring when some form of corruption is seen and someone sees a way to make it better, an example of this would be the Protestant Reformation in 1517. The schism was negative for the Catholic Church, but it was positive for those who had broken away from the Catholics to a better religious way. In cases like these it really depends on perspective when deciding if a schism can be seen as positive or negative, it is highly debatable.
