“Liberty is to faction, what air is to fire” is what James Madison said in 1787. This theory that links to one another has to do with the simple fact that personal liberties permit a group of citizens with the same interest or passion to unite against the rights of other citizens and to follow their own agenda.

The relation between both is more obvious when you take into perception rights like the First Amendment (freedom of speech) and its negative effects e.g. the promotion of violence, discrimination and racism.

Speaking in general, liberty is one's ability to do as we please. Factionalism is a concept of groups of citizens formed against a leader or established authority within a society. One of the greatest dangers to liberty is factionalism itself even though it actively feeds off of it.

In theory there are two ways to control these effects;

1. Remove the cause of the factions.

2. Control the effects of the factions.
