He was the first president in the history of the United States. The American presidency was thus a new political institution in the world by the end of the 18th century; the norm of the time was a ruling monarchy. So, it was a pioneering experiment , a new form of exercising power with powers vested on the institution by a democratic constitution and the consent of the people. It was the first time a real-life government had been formed following the principles of the Enlightenment.
