Haiti's struggle for independence was a much more complex affair. In addition to black and white ethnic groups there was a class of mulattoes who were important in business and as land owners. Also within the ethnic groups there was some division between supporters of monarchy and of republicanism. And to add to the complication there was the role of the Hispanic people who shared the Island of Hispaniola with Haiti. The full story will be told later.
