After Lincoln's election the first seven states left the Union, beginning with South Carolina. Why did those states secede? At that time it was not war, but a Constitutional crisis as those states declared they were forming the Confederate States of America. The first shots were fired at Fort Sumter. What happened here at this fort which still flew the United States flag? It was after this that war began.
