The Declaration of Independence states that ‘all men are created equal’ and the U. S. Constitution begins with the words ‘We, the people.’ However, the reality of life in the early United States showed that only a tiny fraction of the people living in the United States were fully citizens: women, Native Americans, African Americans, and poor people were all denied full legal rights. In your opinion, how much progress has the United States made in the 244 years since the Declaration of Independence was written toward truly living up to the vision of freedom and equality for all citizens? Use examples from this course including laws passed by Congress, decisions of Presidents, Supreme Court decisions and actions of citizens and local governments in your answer. 5 paragraphs, no intro needed.
