Why did the French explore the southern part of the Mississippi? They knew the area was free of a native population and any Spanish threats.

They wished to drive out the Spanish and take over their settlements in the area.

They hoped to protect their interests in the area and hold off Spain and England.

They desired trade with the English and felt the area would support a trading post
