Why was the battle of Gettysburg considered a turning point in the war

The Battle of Gettysburg was the final attempt by the South to assault the North.  Genetal Lee's tactics failed, and he was forced to retreat back to Virginia. This would be the last time any momentum toward a Confederate victory seemed possible.
