What is the best term for a literary work that paints a picture using local color?

As far as I know, there's not a single term for a work that features local color as one of the primary components. A short story or novel could be could be a genre of historical fiction or realistic fiction, or depending on the story it could be an allegory for something about a specific society/lifestyle.
