Fiefs

A fief was land to which peasants were attached. It was the main source of income of a vassal, and the basis of the feudal system. A vassal held this land from the lord, who in exchange received the vassal's services. Although their size varied greatly, a fief usually required 15-30 peasant families to maintain it.
