As for hating history, I suspect some of it has to to with filling out matching and multiple choice sorts of answers.  When dealing with questions about the Reconstruction era, the thing to do is consider the issues and difficulties faced after the Civil War.  Putting the country back together was no easy matter.  Try to have a discussion with some of your friends about the challenges President Johnson faced in the Reconstruction era.  (Lincoln's plans for reconstruction remained plans, because he was assassinated before the Civil War came to its end.)
