A physicist makes a cup of instant coffee and notices that as the coffee cools its level drops 3.00 mm in the ordinary glass cup. Show that this cannot be due to just thermal contraction by calculating the decrease in level if the 350 cm3 of coffee is in a 8.80-cm-diameter cup and as it cools down from 95.0°C to 42.5°C. Assume the glass cup does not undergo significant change in volume during the short time this happens. (Most of the drop in level is actually due to escaping bubbles of air.) The coefficient of volume expansion for coffee is the same as for water, which is 210 ✕ 10−6/°C.
